They come and then sometimes they go. In this article we look at news in Manhattan connected to landmark buildings: two new ones and one that managed to avoid eradication.<br />
<br />
New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) just designated two historic buildings as landmarks: the James NoMad Hotel (formerly the Hotel Seville) and the Emmet Building. Both of these were constructed in the early 20th century. They were the beginning of Madison Square Park north becoming the very active merchandising region it is known for today. Meenakshi Srinivasan, LPC Chair said:
<br />
<blockquote>
"I am thrilled the Commission voted to designate both Hotel Seville and the Emmet Building. These elegant buildings are not only distinctive and exemplary on their own, but together they represent an era of change and development in the area north of Madison Square during the early 20th century. Their location across the street from each other reinforces this intersection as a reminder of the architectural exuberance of their historic period."</blockquote>
Over at Sunset Park, a battle ensued over the maintenance of its sole freestanding mansion. Plans were in place to knock it down and put a seven-story apartment building there. But after much protest from many of the area’s residents), the LPC called for the preservation of the Dr. Maurice T. Lewis House as a “neighborhood icon for years to come.” Following that decision, huge applause and cheers were heard from the public hearing room at the Manhattan Municipal Building.

Hosted by the Westminster Kennel Club on Monday 12th February, thousands of dogs were competing to win the 142nd annual show. Dating back to 1877, the Westminster Dog Show is one of the world’s most famous parades attracting close to 3,000 dogs spanning from throughout America as well as 16 other countries around the world.
The judging is categorized into seven groups: hound, toy, nonsporting, herding, working, sporting and terrier. Winners of each group then go on to group competitions later on in the evening.
The winner this year was a Bichon Frise named Flynn. Handler Bill McFadden said of the win: "It feels a little unreal. I came in expecting nothing except hoping for a good performance, and I think I got it." Having said that, this was the 6 year old’s 42nd career best in show.

There’s always a lot being developed along with a great deal of renovation. For artists, there is the Rockefeller Centre’s incredible “low-relief sculpture, urgent murals, sumptuous bronze, stonework and glass tesserae on a landmark site, bristling with statuary and iconic artwork.” It spans more than 22 acres and has been termed a “city within a city.” Designed by Max Abramovitz, Wallace K Harrison and Raymond Hood, a staggering 40,000 individuals were employed to work on the construction.
Other developments that have been occurring over the last few years, include the happening at the Williamsburg waterfront. Being the first part of the larger Domino megaproject, this 325 Kent Avenue building was just revealed last summer. And of course the new centerpiece of Hudson Yards – the Vessel structure – which has finally reached its full height (featuring 80 landings and 154 staircases). Designed by Brit Thomas Heatherwick, it was constructed over a train depot on the West side and will eventually be surrounded by gardens and a public plaza.

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Possibly. Well, at least New Yorkers will be privy to <i>a
taste</i> of suburban life with the opening of a branch of Target – America’s 2nd
largest discount retail store. Opening
its doors in Midtown Manhattan at 112 West 34th Street, the third
location in Manhattan will open three days from now. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

At one point Target was not known for its presence in NYC. But today that is no longer the case, with another
one due to open next week in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn as well as one in East
Village next year and two more in the region in 2019.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">And there is more positive
suburban-style news for NYC. Insider
City Guides recently ranked Brooklyn Bridge Park in its sightseeing research

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">There are some new eateries opening up
in Midtown Manhattan. Although it
already has three branches in NYC, Joe’s Pizza is now available on Times
Square, at 1435 Broadway. The iconic store originally opened back in 1975 in
Greenwich Village.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Lobster which opened its 12th NYC location in Midtown
Manhattan. Located between West 38th
and 39th Streets, to mark the occasion of its new place, the first
customers to frequent the store received a free lobster roll. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">And for
something completely different a plant-based “fast-food” joint just opened in
Midtown also. Run by Craig Cohran
(co-founder of a plant-based fast food café that already exists in Manhattan),
he opened P.S. Kitchen in Times Square as a way to give back and make a
difference. The idea is to make giving more fun by creating a nice restaurant
that would give profits to charity; enjoy a cocktail and a meal and at the same
time support a worthy cause. The menu is completely plant-based and many of the
employees come from underprivileged backgrounds.<o:p></o:p></span>Miguel Mongehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17604585917821871497noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8981969329813009977.post-9378361619415633922017-08-17T03:00:00.000-07:002017-08-17T03:00:02.145-07:00The Silent Parade<div class="MsoNormal">

East St. Louis Riots during which a slew of blacks were killed and thousands
displaced. The non-speaking march from Fifth Avenue to Madison Square
symbolically represented an anti-violence stance by participants who marched
with signs like: “We march because we deem it a crime to be silent in the face
of such barbaric acts,” and “We march because we want our children to live in a
better land," etc.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

known for its spectacular architecture.
Being home to some of the city’s most iconic buildings (including the
Chrysler, Empire State, and UN HQ), as well as the world’s largest central
business district, it perhaps should not come as much of a surprise that there
is often talk of buildings that were, constructions that are and architectural
designs that are in process. In this

them. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

must-see buildings in New York. </i>Two
of these are in the Midtown Manhattan area.
One is the main branch of the New York Public Library. Designed by architects </span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">John Merven Carrère and Thomas Hastings,
this is the entity’s flagship building and a “prominent historic landmark” in
the midtown area. It is also a very old
building (opening its doors in 1911) and today its 646,680 square feet boasts a
52 foot high ceiling in its famous Rose Main Reading Room, filled with
thousands of reference materials on open shelves, furnished with brass lamps,
comfy chairs and sturdy wood tables. Of course the grand chandeliers add to the
grandiose nature of the building as well.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

in a very minimalist style. With 18,000
square feet at its disposal, this will feature both open and closed work areas
as well as a showroom made out of modular rolling elements. In addition, surfaces will be in black and
white and have a very organized feel.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

midtown Manhattan is great for that, especially when it comes to parks, given

annual summer opening ceremony. Those present
were able to tromp over the freshly grown grass, crushing it with picnic
blankets. This is because, every year,
the lawn there is torn out and regrown in spring for those to enjoy in the
summer. With the new lawn open, the city
has put together a calendar of events, such as outdoor theater, meditation and dance
classes and nighttime yoga.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">In other
park-related news in the region, Manhattaners should take advantage of the
green space that surrounds the American Museum of Natural History. At the
Theodore Roosevelt Park, an initiative from Parks Without Borders is seeking
approval to progress in this project.
Director of Long Range Policy and Planning of the Institute, Sarah
Nielsen said the aim is to “make parks more open and welcoming and beautiful by
improving entrances, edge and park-adjacent spaces.” As co-manager of the
Theodore Roosevelt Park Project, she will lead a study on how the space is used
and to determine what improvements might be viable. The idea is to really investigate – and improve
on – the current status of the neighborhood. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

The proposed “silly straw supertall structure” designed by Ioannis Oikonomou believes his design features New York’s “hidden layers,” and thus tells the tale of how we perceive the city. It would connect the two towers over Calvary Baptist Church. As Oikonomou pointed out:
<blockquote>
“[New York] architecture no longer operates as formation of buildings and streets. It is a cluster of catalysts to memories and emotions which inhabit our minds.” </blockquote>
Right now the area is quite crowded. It is filled with a seven-story prewar building and a 77-floor condo. Should the building go ahead, it would take up 2,000 feet (in height).
Of course there is some opposition to the plan. Most notably from Chair of Community Board 5’s Sunshine Task Force, Layla Law-Gisiko who referred to the design as “silly and out of touch.”

Midtowners should be happy that choices are expanding. A Whole Foods Market is opening its newest

health conscious it has a large selection.
Its official opening will begin with a celebratory bread baking event
which will start at 8.45am on the first day, 28th January and then
15 minutes later the 36,000 sq. ft. store will be open for business. Featuring quick-serve prepared foods that

somewhat unique (compared to those across the country and maybe even worldwide)
since the produce selection is actually driven by Manhattan’s
multi-culturalism, and given that around 36 percent of Manhattaners are
foreign-born with 60 million tourists per annum, tons of ethnic options make
the rounds, which is often reflected in the layout and offerings of each
market.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

companies and organizations moving to the midtown Manhattan area. One of them is Heartbeat – a healthcare

Its new offices are on the 5th floor on One Penn Plaza. Since its inception 6 years ago, the company’s

of these archived objects are fantastic ways of learning about the history and

excavated throughout the five boroughs, including: Stadt Huys (that was New

have to entertain guests at his home). It was Nan A. Rothschild herself, a

For a true hidden gem in n midtown Manhattan, smack in the
middle of the East 59th Street skyscrapers, you will find an amazing six-story
literary oasis. Although in business for more than nine decades, too many
people don’t’ know about this store that is operated by three sisters in their
70s. it was their father – who passed
away in 1991 – who set it up. <u><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></u></div>

Lee Feinstein, an independent critic for painting students at the <a href="http://artuathletics.com/index.aspx?path=softball" target="_blank">Academy of Art University</a> in San Francisco, will be showing her own most recent works at the Ruth Baggett Gallery in Paducah, Kentucky.<br />
<br />
The show, entitled, “No Dawdling,” opens on June 18 and will run until July 31.<br />
<br />
Feinstein’s work is mostly with Tyvek. The material resembles Japanese rice paper, but it is actually a high-density polyethylene industrial material. Feinstein applies several processes to Tyvek, including painting, folding, dyeing, crimping and crumpling, creating workable sculptures which remind the viewer of fashion, architecture, or other Japanese-style décor.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“My studio was a godsend–north light in a white space, with crumbling ceilings all around. It was the perfect place to render my own version of clarity in the midst of chaos,” said Feinstein. “Paducah and the arts community were a goldmine for me. Warm and welcoming, deep into their own work…we had good art talks.”</blockquote>
Feinstein departed temporarily from her work as critic at the Academy of Art University and began her month long creating spree on May 1st at the Paducah Arts Alliance. The “No Dawdling” title comes from the great American avant-garde composer and artist John Cage. “It was my mantra in Paducah,” said Feinstein. “Jump in. Don’t think too much. Don’t judge, just work. Accept what comes in the creative process, the gifts of accident. The wrong turns and dead ends. The side steps. Lots of side steps."Miguel Mongehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17604585917821871497noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8981969329813009977.post-84265831977695150802016-06-12T01:58:00.000-07:002016-06-12T01:58:09.827-07:00History of Empire State Building<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Where did the name Empire State
Building originate? When was it
built? How large is it? In this video, these questions on the
skyscraper that can be found at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th
Street are discussed. <o:p></o:p></div>
